De-shedding Treatment
For Dogs With Heavy Shedding or Double Coats
Many dogs naturally shed large amounts of hair throughout the year, especially during seasonal coat changes. Our De-Shedding Treatment is designed to safely remove loose undercoat while protecting the health of your dog’s natural coat.
This treatment is especially beneficial for breeds such as Golden Retrievers, Australian Shepherds, Huskies, German Shepherds, Great Pyrenees, and other double-coated dogs.
Rather than shaving the coat — which can damage coat growth and interfere with temperature regulation — our de-shedding process focuses on removing loose undercoat while preserving the protective outer coat.
Our de-shedding service is an add-on upgrade that can be added to a Bath & Brush, Mini Groom, or Full Groom appointment.
Pricing
De-Shedding Treatment is an add-on service and must be combined with a grooming service.
Typical pricing:
• 0-30 lbs:
$15
• 31–60 lbs:
$25
• 61-90 lbs:
$35
• 91+ lbs: $45
What the De-Shedding Treatment Includes
• Professional de-shedding shampoo to loosen the undercoat
• Deep conditioning treatment to release trapped shedding hair
• High-velocity blowout to remove loose undercoat
• Thorough brush-out with professional de-shedding tools
• Removal of impacted undercoat buildup
This process significantly reduces shedding at home while keeping your dog’s coat healthy, breathable, and comfortable.
Why We Do Not Shave Double-Coated Dogs
Double-coated breeds have a protective coat designed to regulate temperature and protect the skin. Shaving these coats can permanently damage coat growth and interfere with the coat’s natural function.
Instead of shaving, our groomer focuses on proper undercoat removal and coat maintenance to keep the coat healthy and manageable.

Matting, Coat Care & Additional Grooming Time
Keeping Your Dog Comfortable and Safe
Every dog’s coat condition is different when they arrive for grooming. While many coats brush out easily, some dogs arrive with tangles, matting, heavy undercoat buildup, or behaviors that require additional time and care.
Our priority is always the comfort, safety, and well-being of your dog. In some cases, additional services or handling may be required to safely complete the groom.
When this occurs, additional charges may apply depending on the time and work involved.

What Is Matting?
Matting occurs when loose hair becomes tightly tangled against the skin. These tangles can tighten over time and trap moisture, debris, and bacteria.
Severe matting can cause:
• skin irritation
• bruising under the coat
• restricted movement
• hot spots or infections
• discomfort during brushing
For this reason, severely matted coats cannot always be safely brushed out. In these cases, the safest and most humane option may be to shave the coat shorter than originally requested. Our groomer will always prioritize your dog’s comfort and safety first.
Dematting (Minor Matting)
If your dog has light to moderate tangles that can safely be brushed out, we may perform a dematting service.
Dematting requires additional time and care to gently work through tangles without causing discomfort.
Dematting Fee
• $15 for the first 15 minutes
• $1 per additional minute
• Maximum of 20 minutes
If matting cannot be safely brushed out within this timeframe, the coat may need to be trimmed or shaved shorter.
Pre-Shave for Severely Matted Coats
When a coat is heavily matted, bathing the dog before removing the matting can actually make the mats tighter and more uncomfortable.
In these cases, the safest option is to pre-shave the coat before the bath so the dog can be properly cleaned and made comfortable.
Pre-Shave Pricing
• Small dogs (15–30 lbs): $10
• Medium dogs (31–60 lbs): $15
• Large dogs (61–90 lbs): $20
• Extra large dogs (91+ lbs): $25
Spot Mat Removal
Some dogs arrive with a few isolated tight mats in sensitive areas such as:
• behind the ears
• under the collar or harness
• under the legs
• around the tail
• around the sanitary area
If these mats cannot be brushed out comfortably, they may need to be carefully shaved out while preserving the rest of the coat.
Spot Mat Removal
• $10 for 1–2 small mats
• $15 for multiple small mats
Special Handling Fee
Some dogs require additional time, patience, or specialized handling to safely complete grooming services.
This may include dogs that:
• are extremely anxious or fearful
• have difficulty standing for grooming
• require additional breaks during the groom
• resist brushing, drying, or nail trimming
• require two handlers for safety
When significantly more time or assistance is required, a Special Handling Fee may be applied.
Special Handling Fee
• $20
Our goal is always to provide a calm, safe experience for every dog.

FAQ's
How long does a grooming appointment take?
Grooming times can vary depending on your dog’s size, coat condition, behavior, and the services requested. On average, most grooming appointments take 1.5–3 hours to complete.
When your dog’s groom is finished, our team will send a “Ready for Pickup” text message. We kindly ask that dogs be picked up within 30–45 minutes of this notification so we can safely accommodate other grooming appointments throughout the day.
How often should my dog be groomed?
Most dogs benefit from professional grooming every 6–8 weeks, although this can vary depending on breed, coat type, and lifestyle.
Dogs with longer coats or curly coats (such as doodles or poodles) often need grooming every 4–6 weeks, while short-coated breeds may only need occasional baths and nail trims.
Regular grooming helps keep your dog’s coat healthy, reduces shedding, and prevents matting.
Can I stay during the grooming appointment?
For the safety and comfort of all dogs in our care, we do not allow owners to remain in the grooming area during appointments. Many dogs behave differently when their owners are nearby, which can make grooming more stressful or difficult for them. Our groomer works carefully to create a calm and focused environment so each dog can have the best experience possible.
What vaccines are required?
For the health and safety of all pets in our care, dogs must be current on the following vaccinations before their grooming appointment:
•
Rabies
•
DHPP (Distemper/Parvo)
•
Bordetella
These requirements help us maintain a safe, healthy environment for every dog visiting Wildcat Country Dog Retreat. (**PLEASE NOTE- If you are using our overnight boarding or daycare services a Negative Annual Fecal Test is also required.)
When will my dog be ready for pickup?
Once your dog’s grooming service is complete, you will receive a text message letting you know your dog is ready for pickup.
We ask that dogs be picked up within 30–45 minutes of this notification whenever possible. Our facility is open for drop-offs and pick-ups from 8:00 AM–12:00 PM and 3:00 PM–6:00 PM.
If a dog is not picked up within 60 minutes of the ready notification, they may be moved to daycare or overnight boarding, and the applicable rate may apply.
